The Rome Hotel Columbus enjoys a most enviable location literally in the wake of Piazza San Pietro at the end of Via della Conciliazione, the spectacular thoroughfare built by Mussolini in 1937 to glorify the Cathedral Basilica of St Peter. This royal and grandiose road leads from Castel Sant’Angelo and the Sant’Angelo Bridge on the River Tiber to the magnificent entrance of Piazza San Pietro, where the Pope regularly addresses millions of devoted followers from his famous balcony.
Few 4 Star Vatican Hotels can boast a location quite so within reach of the Holy City. Apart from the Columbus Hotel’s immediate vicinity to St Peter’s, a short walk in the other direction brings us into the ancient city, and such wonders as the Colosseum, the Imperal Roman Forum, The Pantheon, The Trevi Fountain, The Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona.
It’s advisable to print out the Interactive Map of Rome below to assist you in finding us more easily.
To reach the Hotel Columbus by car, enter the city from the Gran Raccordo Anulare (GRA) Ring Road and take Exit 1, signposted Via Aurelia. Follow signs for Centro and Vaticano. Upon reaching Piazza del Risorgimento alongside the Vatican Walls, follow the one-way system to the end of Via Stefano Porcari and turn right onto Piazza Pia, finally turning right again onto Via della Conciliazione.
From Leonardo da Vinci Airport, otherwise known as Fiumicino Airport, there’s a rail link to the city’s primary train station, Termini, until around 11pm. Alternatively, a taxi costs a fixed rate of €40 until 10pm after which it goes on the meter. Make sure the driver switches tariffs on entering the city at the above mentioned GRA Ring Road.
From Termini a taxi during the day should cost no more than about €10, or if you’re feeling adventurous you could take the Metro to Ottaviano San Pietro (Red Line). From here the hotel is a 10-minute walk: Go down Via Ottaviano, clockwise around the Vatican Wall itself before emerging in front of the magnificent Piazza San Pietro. Walk directly away from St Peter’s and you’ll find Hotel Columbus on the right hand side after a few minutes.
